The second edition of 3R Day – Models in Biomedical Research, organized by the 3R Knowledge Center (3RKC), took place on October 18th at i3S. This annual gathering brought together researchers to explore the integration of the 3Rs principles—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—into biomedical research, fostering a commitment to ethical and innovative scientific practices.
Models are fundamental tools for understanding gene functions and disease mechanisms, providing systems that replicate critical aspects of living organisms. Advances in alternative methods continue to reshape the field, introducing sophisticated in-vitro systems and simpler in-vivo models that reduce the dependence on mammalian experimentation. However, complex animal models remain indispensable, highlighting the constant need for ethical reflection and methodological refinement.
A diverse and engaging lineup of speakers enriched the event by sharing their expertise on the 3Rs across various research areas. The invited speakers for the first session included Magda Castelhano-Carlos (SPCAL, ICVS) discussing 3R policy implementation, Helena Azevedo (i3S) addressing biomaterial engineering to support the 3Rs and Carmen Aguilar (University of Würzburg) presenting organoid-based approaches for studying prostate pathology.
The program also showcased selected presentations, many by PhD students, offering participants the opportunity to present and discuss their innovative projects spanning biomaterial development, cancer research, and beyond. Technical presentations and discussions made the event a platform for showcasing 3Rs-related research and applications. Topics ranged from advanced biomaterials and imaging technologies to organoids and in-vivo models, such as C. elegans and zebrafish. The event concluded with a dynamic round-table discussion, addressing a wide range of challenges and technical solutions available to researchers, sparking meaningful dialogue and exchange of ideas.
Attendees appreciated the event’s thoughtful balance of scientific and practical content. One participant noted: “I thought it was very good. I enjoyed the scientific talks, and having a more technical section is also helpful for those just starting with other models… I liked the format a lot!”
The organizing committee extends thanks to all speakers and participants for their contributions to the success of 3R Day. By fostering collaboration and innovation, the event continues to drive advancements in ethical and high-quality biomedical research.
We are now challenging colleagues in the Lisbon area to host the 2026 edition – stay tuned!
