A center to promote 3Rs in life & health sciences research in Portugal

What We Do

The 3Rs Knowledge Center (3RKC) is the central hub for 3Rs, based at i3S and serving the entire research community in Portugal and beyond.

The 3Rs stand for Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement of animal experimentation. 3RKC aims to promote the implementation of the 3Rs through sharing knowledge and resources. Although it is based at i3S, the center’s resources are available to researchers everywhere.

Research

An important part of the strategy of the 3R Knowledge Center is to produce new knowledge – to do research into the 3Rs.

Training

The 3R Knowledge Center training portfolio includes a large variety of courses on 3R-related topics.

Infrastructure

The 3R Knowledge Center research support infrastructure brings together different 3Rs relevant scientific platforms.

Events & dissemination

The center promotes public events and dissemination activities to promote the 3R in and out of the scientific community.

WHAT IS THE 3R?

This is a guiding principle for researchers using animals.

REPLACEMENT

Replacement methods are those that avoid the use of animals for a specific research purpose.

REDUCTION

Reduction means that fewer animals are used.

Refinement means that the negative impact of animals used in research is minimized.
