The 3Rs Knowledge Center (3RKC) is the central hub for 3Rs. The 3Rs stand for Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement of animal experimentation.
3RKC aims to promote the implementation of the 3Rs through sharing knowledge and resources. Although it is based at i3S, the center’s resources are available to researchers everywhere.
The work of the center includes research, training, and infrastructure but also events and dissemination.

Vision
The 3Rs Knowledge Center (3RKC) is a center for knowledge and competencies in methods to Replace, Reduce and Refine animal experiments in life and health sciences research in Portugal.
Our vision is a research community working with the best models and methods to answer scientific questions while minimizing animal harm.
We work towards this by disseminating knowledge and providing practical support to researchers.
Our mission is
- to gather, curate and disseminate existing knowledge and competence in methods that can Replace, Reduce and Refine animal experiments;
- to raise awareness of 3Rs policies and available know-how and resources;
- to provide training in each of the 3Rs;
- to facilitate the implementation of 3Rs methods;
- to promote the development of new 3Rs methods.

The 3Rs Knowledge Center is represented in the international networks 3Rs concepts to improve the quality of biomedical science (IMPROVE) and EU3RNet.
The 3RKC was established as a milestone in the REMODEL project (Horizon 2020, grant agreement No 857491).
